Bird Insurance

It is often the case that people don’t even consider bird insurance. Many types of pet insurance such as cat and dog insurance are incredibly common but bird insurance, not really.

Well if you are one of these people it is advisable that you carry out a little research into vets bills and medication should your pet bird become ill and receive treatment.

A common assumption is that because birds are so small generally not a lot that can go wrong and if it does it won’t cost much to put right. Well a pet bird is at risk of many illnesses and it is possible for it to suffer from an accident just the same as any other pet, if you have to take it to the vet, treatment could add up to quite a sum.

If you have an exotic pet bird the it would be wise to consult a specialist for your insurance needs but any other type of bird can be insured by using one of the insurance comparison websites on the internet or by asking your vet which one they would recommend. If the bird has had previous health problems be sure to make that known. It will increase the price of the premiums but if you kept quiet and the bird became ill all cover would become null and void should the insurer find out, and believe it or not, they probably will.

Be aware that if you ask the vet if they can recommend a bird insurance policy they will usually offer something quite expensive so that they can make some money on it. If you have dealt with vets in the past you will be aware that this is how they typically operate.

Don’t put an excess on this insurance that is to high because if you do you will find that any minor treatment comes in below this so you will end up paying for the policy but not receiving any of the benefits.

If you are on any kind of social security benefits you could find that you are allowed to receive free or discounted bird insurance at some vets, It never hurts to ask if you are able to get discounts or make savings on your bird insurance.
